The Probus Club of Guildford is one of around 1500 such clubs around the country the main aim of which is to allow retired business or professional gentlemen to meet with similar men for purely social purposes. Apart from the UK, Probus clubs are in existence around the world.

We were the first Probus Club in Guildford and were launched by the Vocational Committee of the Rotary Club of Guildford in November 1969 and was an instantaneous success. Wilfred Cruise was elected founder Chairman.

The Guildford Probus Club meets once a month at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Guildford where members can enjoy a drink and a reasonably priced lunch followed by a guest speaker talking on a subject that should be of interest to the members.

On two occasions during the year (in early summer and at Christmas) the monthly lunch is a Ladies’ Lunch where members are accompanied by their wives or partners and where the Club tries to obtain a talk on any subject that may be of interest to the ladies. Although these lunches are for members and their partners single members are not precluded and many of them attend and seem to enjoy the company of the other members and their ladies.

Other functions of the Club throughout the year consist of a number of outings or trips to places of interest. During the past year visits have taken place including to the Olympic Park in Stratford, a tour of ‘Legal London’ and to Lambeth Palace. An a trip to the Christmas concert at the Royal Albert Hall in December.

If you do become a member, there is no obligation to do anything other than turn up for the monthly lunch sit back and socialise with other members. Although the Club does make a small donation annually to a charity chosen by the Club Chairman, the Club is not intended to be a charitable organisation and there is no commitment on any members except the enjoy themselves. This is the whole purpose of Probus.

The Probus club of Guildford has been in existence for in excess of 40 years and continues to thrive and to serve anyone who becomes a member.
